Answers and Explanations
1. (B) The correct sentence is: The old man has ordered some pancakes and sandwiches. We can’t put a preposition after “Order” because it is a transitive verb.
2. (A) The correct sentence is: After you return from Paris, we will come to see you. The conditional clause starting from “after” should be written in the present tense.
3. (A) The correct sentence is: My fiancé has been working in this institute for the last nine months.
4. (C) The correct sentence is: Stronger men should be prohibited from taking advantage of weaker men.
5. (D) These days, many a player is disturbed because of emotional stress. The sentence has no error. Because “Many a” is a singular construction, a singular verb should come after it, not a plural one.
6. (B) The correct sentence is: She was the right candidate for the job.
7. (C) The correct sentence is: Rachel is an intelligent girl and has a childlike grace. “Childish” has a negative connotation.
8. (A) The correct sentence is: On March 20, 2019, a lock-out was declared in the mill. The sentence is in simple past tense.
9. (C) The correct sentence is: When my uncle was unwell, I went to the nursing home on alternate weekends.
10. (B) The correct sentence is: The attractive surroundings of the place enthralled my friend. Surroundings or environs must be in plural form.
11. (C) The correct sentence is: As no help was available, she carried all her luggage herself. Luggage is an uncountable noun and does not have a plural form.
12. (B) The correct sentence is: She was not able to cope with the requirements of the job. “Cope up with” and “Cope up” are grammatically incorrect constructions.
13. (C) The correct sentence is: Lasik has become a vital tool for any complicated eye surgery. “Eyes surgery” is an incorrect construction because adjectives are generally written in a singular form.
14. (B) The correct sentence is: We take immense pleasure in welcoming you to our neighborhood. “In welcome you” is a faulty construction.
15. (B) The correct sentence is: It is highly conceited of him to think that he will succeed every time.
16. (B) The correct sentence is: Either Noah or his brothers have committed this mistake. In case of “either-or” constructions, the proximity principle is applicable. Here, the verb follows the 2nd subject i.e his brothers. So, the correct usage will be “have committed”.
17. (B) The correct sentence is: He as well as his cousins has played for the country. Replace “have played” with “has played” because when 2 subjects are joined using a phrase like “as well as”, the verb follows the 1st subject.
18. (B) The correct sentence is: Mr. Mark is still considered the best male actor by some film experts. “Considered as” is a faulty construction. “As” can’t be placed after considered.
19. (C) The correct sentence is: Agatha has been pursuing a financial accounting programme in my college for one year. “From one year” isn’t correct because in the present perfect continuous tense “for” and not “from” is used showing duration.
20. (C) The correct sentence is: We shall strive to be on time, but do not be anxious if we are late. “We shall be late” is incorrect because a conditional clause, starting with if, can’t be written in the future tense.
21. (B) The correct sentence is: The new tablet is superior to an average laptop. In the case of superior, comparison will be made by “to” and not “than”
22. (B) The correct sentence is: Now-a-days music albums generally comprise 9 or 10 tracks of around 4 minutes each. After comprises “of” is not used.
23. (C) The correct sentence is: Jack, Jill and Jenny are old friends, but they seldom agree with one another. There are 3 persons mentioned in this sentence. The reciprocal pronoun for more than two persons is “one another” and not “each other”.
24. (C) The correct sentence is: India was repeatedly attacked by foreign invaders between Between 1600 AD and 1800 AD. “Between 1600 AD to 1800 AD” is a faulty construction. The correct pair of correlative conjunctions is “between & and”, not “between & to”.
25. (C) The correct sentence is: John’s mother does not approve of his mountain biking. Biking is a gerund and before every gerund, the possessive case is used i.e “his” and not “him”.
